Where The Hell Have You Been? by Tom Carver (Reviewed by Chris Colussi)

Field Marshal Montgomery’s grandson Tom Carver tells a family story recommended to the reviewer by a London cabbie. The narrative centres on Carver’s father, Richard, Monty’s stepson, while also touching on the celebrated campaigns in North Africa and Italy.

Richard Carver met Monty in the desert before being sent on a mission that led to his capture and transfer through a succession of Italian POW camps. Following the 1943 armistice he escaped, heading south across rugged country to reach advancing Allied forces. His eventual reunion with Monty reputedly prompted the book’s title question.

This personal account will appeal to readers interested in escape stories from Italy and the family dynamics surrounding one of Britain’s most famous commanders.
