Shadow Warriors – Daring Missions of WW2 by Women of the OSS and SOE by Gordon Thomas and Greg Lewis
The Second World War was the first conflict in which women were trained on a large scale for clandestine operations. Taught silent killing, small-arms handling, sabotage, espionage and radio procedure, these agents proved they could lead Resistance groups and fight alongside partisans. As couriers, they transformed the art of spying.
Masters of disguise, they could fade into the background—or flash a disarming smile to breeze through a checkpoint. Most British women served with SOE or SIS. After the United States entered the war in December 1941, the newly formed Office of Strategic Services recruited women too. The first cohort travelled to the UK to train alongside SOE counterparts before deploying in the field with both SOE and SIS.
By 1945 the OSS employed more than 4,000 women. This book tells the stories of many daring agents who paid with their lives, as well as those who survived to share their extraordinary experiences.
