Il Sentiero Della Libertà
In the 1990s, collaboration between a former Italian POW, Keith Killby, the Liceo Scientifico, and Roger Stanton of ELMS, developed the notion of a trail from Sulmona to the Sangro River to commemorate the escape of Italian POWs and the help they received following the 1943 Armistice.

The first internationally attended trail was a great success with hundreds of participants setting out for the first stop. Local history and commemoration developed into the Freedom Trail Cultural Association, from which the annual Il Sentiero della Liberta was formed, still with close ties to the Liceo Scientifico.
The Freedom Trail is a 60km hike across three days, along the trails that cross the Majella. Around 500 people, mostly students, participate.
